Invasive species,

Zebra Mussels

Lake Helen, On Reserve

Lake, drinking water, eco system. Water plant intake pugged.

Native Fish and wildlife. (Their food source is removed.) The species effects the Lake by removing plankton, which supports the eco system.

Water intake plugged.

Invasive species,

Rusty Crayfish

Lake Helen, On-Reserve

Lake, drinking water, eco system

Rusty crayfish outcompete native species for resources, they can harm native fish populations by eating their eggs and young leading to eco -system imbalance

Monitoring waterways

Summer 2024

Data collection completed

Invasive species,

Lamprey

Lake Superior

Eco System

Sea lampreys are parasitic fish, that attach to other fish. They reduce the population of fish that are native to the environment leading to an imbalance in the eco-system.

Participated in monitoringthe use of lampricides in the Nipigon Marina Bay with RRIB students & educating the youth the importance of data collection and invasive species removal.

Water Plant Intake

Lake Helen, On Reserve

Drinking water for municipality

Could be clogged or partially.

Zebra mussels starting to clog intake

Water intake inspection with under water Drone

Water intake inspection with Divers if intake cannot be found with under water Drone.

Water Distribution

Valves (Isolation)

Lake Helen Reserve

Drinking Water in the Municipality

Bent, unable to get a valve key on to shut on/off valve.

Currently in the process of applying for funding to fix valves.

Water Distribution

Water mains

Lake Helen

Reserve

Drinking Water in the Municipality

Backfilled years ago, with improper backfill, clay instead of sand and gravel.

Leaks in the distribution, possible cracks in the water main.

Currently in the process of applying for funding to fix the water main if there are leaks and properly backfill with the proper sand/gravel media.

Debris

Lake Helen Bay, creeks

Drinking Water & recreational animals

Chemicals, synthetic materials and VOCs contaminating the water shed& eco-system

Organize a community clean-up for the spring Annually

Alexander Falls Dam (Hydro One)

Nipigon River,

Which feeds into Lake Helen.

Drinking Water & Recreational animals

It can change the water temp.,chemistry, flow, characteristics, silt loads. These changes may have a negative effect on the native plant s and animals around the river, effecting the eco system.

Daily testing in the water plant lab for

Changes in the

  • P.H.

  • Turbidity

  • Temperature

Keep a daily log for data collection for future references.
